FME Desktop vs. FME Server

The core of FME is the FME Engine. It is the same in all editions. This contains all the functionality required to implement the built models.

The most important feature of FME Desktop is the 'FME Workbench' application, which allows you to develop models and data flows. Thanks to FME Desktop, these 'workspaces' are executed with a proverbial push of a button. The options for automating this starting process are limited; you need to use other software that starts the FME process under certain conditions.

FME Server basically contains the same FME Engine. This is surrounded by a framework that makes it possible to execute the workspaces based on various events. Transformations can be scheduled in the simplest form. In addition to 'time,' a variety of other external triggers can be defined. For example, FME Server can respond dynamically to e-mail or data streams from IoT devices. The functionality designed within FME is fully accessible on FME Server as services, allowing FME Server to grow into a central hub in an information system.

To develop the transformations that run on FME Server, an FME Desktop license is required.
