Jelmer Akkerman

Business Line Manager

I have been working at Tensing since January 2018 as a senior GIS consultant. In projects I form the link between business and (geo) ICT technology.

My knowledge of geographic information systems and application building processes enables me to solve complex — often spatial — issues. Using my knowledge of (Geographic) Information Systems, I develop web applications and I design and use relational databases. My strength lies in translating the functional wishes of the business into a good technical design and into the realization of software solutions.

My specialties are:

  • Speaking both the language of the business and that of IT
  • Developing concepts and analyzing systems in the field of GIS and application construction
  • esigning and developing (web) applications
  • Overseeing Information Management initiatives

After completing my studies in Soil, Water and Atmosphere at Wageningen University in 2006, I started my career as a GIS consultant at one of the largest engineering firms in the Netherlands. After that I worked for about three years in a similar role at a Geo-ICT agency. At the beginning of 2018 I made the choice to work at Tensing. Tensing's (international) ambitions and its focus on knowledge exchange — as well as its Gold partnership with Esri — were elements that really appealed to me.

I have gained my work experience in projects for various clients in both the private and public sectors, including managers of energy networks, oil and gas companies, provinces, national government institutions, water companies and environmental services, both in the Netherlands and internationally.

In my spare time, I am an avid athlete and mountain enthusiast. I prefer to combine both interests by climbing a mountain pass with my racing bike in summer and skiing down a slope in winter!

My strength lies in translating the functional wishes of the business into a good technical design and into the realization of software solutions.
